THE COUNCIL
The Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (Cap 244) was for the first time enacted in 2002 with intension to regulating the practice of traditional and alternative medicine in the country. This means that, before the traditional and medicines activities were not regulated with any law. Therefore issues related to traditional and alternative medicine were handled under the traditional and alternative medicine section by issuing permits to practitioners to undertake such practices.

The Traditional and Alternative Health Practice Council is a statutory body vested with legal powers to oversee traditional and alternative health practice in mainland Tanzania. In particular the Council has been empowered to monitor, regulate, promote and support the development of traditional and alternative medicine.
